SUNSET POINT BOAT HOUSE RENOVATIONS
2017 | ORANGE BEACH, ALABAMA
To accommodate a new, larger vessel, this client in Orange Beach, Alabama, needed to widen an existing boat slip and shade the boat from direct sun exposure. MADE was asked to design a covered structure to achieve these goals, while complementing the existing dock structure, constructed in 2010, and the residence.
We created a 40-foot-wide by 100-foot-long visually transparent canopy in which aluminum louvers on three sides provide a visual screen, shade from direct sunlight, and a surface to reflect the lighting. The steel superstructure, designed to clear the retracted outriggers, is shop welded galvanized steel with a fluoropolymer finish, ensuring lasting color and protection against rust in this marine environment. Playful LED lighting effects accompany the subsurface lighting of the vessel. The roof is white aluminum standing seam to match the roof of the adjacent dock kitchen, and the gently swooping ridge line mimics that of the curved skylight of the adjacent dock. An LED color changing lighting system illuminates both the inside and outside of the dock.
